Clinical Care

Meroë Psychiatric was founded by Frank S. K. Appah Jr., MD, PhD, to provide individualized, evidence-based psychiatric care that is open-minded and collaborative. The practice emphasizes thoughtful evaluation and treatment of mood and anxiety disorders, unusual perceptions and distressing voice hearing, and complex or difficult-to-treat conditions. Care may integrate psychotherapy, medication, exercise, meditation, complementary approaches, and spiritual practices according to each client’s needs and preferences.

Services include:

Psychiatric Evaluation & Consultation

Comprehensive evaluations, diagnostic clarification, and second opinions for adolescents and adults, including complex presentations and diagnostic uncertainty.

In-Person & Telepsychiatry Appointments

Psychiatric evaluation, psychotherapy, and medication management are available in person at our Westport office and through secure video appointments.

Medication Management

Individualized medication treatment based on symptoms, medical history, previous response, and client preferences. Care may include medication adjustments, simplifying complex regimens, and careful deprescribing when appropriate.

Psychotherapy

Individual psychotherapy may be provided independently or integrated with medication management and other aspects of psychiatric care.

Complex & Treatment-Resistant Conditions

Consultation for persistent symptoms, diagnostic uncertainty, medication intolerance, complex medication regimens, or limited response to previous treatment.

ADHD & Neurodevelopmental Care

Evaluation and treatment of ADHD and related neurodevelopmental concerns in adolescents and adults, using medication and non-medication approaches when appropriate.

Substance Use Disorders

Evaluation and treatment of substance use disorders, including alcohol and opioid use disorders. Treatment may include medications such as buprenorphine for opioid use disorder and care for co-occurring psychiatric conditions.

Laboratory Testing & Medication Safety Monitoring

Laboratory testing may be used to identify nutritional deficiencies and medical factors relevant to psychiatric symptoms, as well as to monitor medication safety and tolerability.

Pharmacogenetic Testing

When clinically useful, pharmacogenetic testing may provide additional information about genetic differences affecting medication metabolism and help inform treatment decisions alongside the clinical history.

Emerging Treatment Options

Established treatments are considered alongside thoughtful exploration of new and emerging therapies, with attention to the strength and limitations of available evidence.

Collaborative Care

When helpful, care is coordinated with physicians, psychologists, therapists, dietitians, naturopaths, schools, treatment programs, and other specialists to support well-integrated treatment.
